The Sri Lanka Consulate General in Jeddah, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Expatriate Society in Jeddah, hosted a lively celebration of the Thai Pongal festival at the Consulate premises On January 31, 2025. The event, attended by members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community highlighted the rich cultural traditions of Sri Lanka and provided a chance for the community to come together and enjoy the festivities.
The celebration featured a variety of cultural performances by local community members, showcasing the traditional customs and vibrant spirit of Thai Pongal. Beyond the festivities, the event served as an opportunity for reflection on the deeper significance of the festival.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Consul General of Sri Lanka in Jeddah emphasized the importance of Thai Pongal, explaining that the celebration reminds us of our connection to the land and the natural elements that sustain us. “Thai Pongal is not just a time to celebrate, but also a chance to reflect on our relationship with nature, our families, friends, and neighbors. It’s a moment to think about how we impact the world around us and to appreciate the abundance that nature gives us,” said the Acting Consul General.
The event was a wonderful occasion for the Sri Lankan community in Jeddah to come together and celebrate their traditions, reinforcing the bonds that connect them, even when far from home. Members of the Indian community also attended the event in celebration of this global festival.
